WFC Conference Scholarship

The WFC Scholarship covers the registration cost for one Washington state fire chief each year.

According to fire chiefs, the WFC Conference is a must-attend event that provides benefits on multiple levels:

  1. The vendor fair, a showcase of the latest and greatest in firefighting technology and gear, offers chiefs the ability to test new equipment and learn how to modernize their own departments to protect their communities more effectively.
  2. Interacting with other chiefs allows attendees to build a network of peers they can call for advice and consult about emerging issues. Whether running a complex metropolitan department or a small rural outfit, chiefs can tap into the wealth of knowledge provided by their colleagues, including the expert perspectives provided by more experienced chiefs.
  3. Classroom-based training sessions deliver first-class tips and tools in an interactive environment where chiefs can learn and ask targeted questions.

FPI Conference Scholarship

The FPI Scholarship covers the event registration cost for one Washington state fire professional each year.

The weeklong Fire Protection Institute is hosted by the Washington State Association of Fire Marshals, the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Washington Public Fire Educators, and the Washington chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI).

Each year, the scholarship recipient will have the opportunity to network with other fire officials, attend various educational sessions and return to their communities with increased fire prevention, education, and investigation knowledge. Additionally, the annual event includes essential Continuing Education training hours needed for code recertification.

Attendees can attend a variety of seminars, lessons, and trainings. Courses range from Basic Skills Training and Firefighter RIT Operations to specialized topics such as Fires in Hybrid Vehicles & New Car Tech. The event also features the Fire Service Vendor Show and the Annual Awards Banquet & Firefighters' Ball.

Previous Scholarship Recipients

"I enjoyed attending the annual WFC Conference. The instructors at the conference are people teaching from real-life experience and there was training available that I could immediately put into play once back in the district. I was able to connect with other Chiefs, many of which I only know by attending this conference, and was able to discuss their programs and how they deal with the challenges that we all face in managing a fire district."

Jim Oatey
Fire Chief at the Orondo Fire Department

"My current jurisdiction a large rural area, and, up to this point, we have not had an engaged fire marshal; I feel that we are woefully behind with a fire inspection program. I know what is needed to protect the community where my family works, lives, learns, and recreates, and I require knowledge that comes from exposure to like-minded individuals that would be found in WSAFM and the Fire Protection Institute."

Phil Cecere, CBO CFM
Building Official Fire Marshal at Jefferson County DCD

Attended the Washington Fire Chiefs Conference in 2023.

"High Prairie is a rural volunteer fire department located in south central Washington state. We provide fire, rescue, and medical response services to 50.25 square miles which includes almost 400 residents and several state, federal, and tribal properties."
